Does Your Roof Look Like This?

Hey who spilled coffee on my roof?

It sorta looks like that doesn't it! Well unfortunately the black spots you see is not coffee or dirt. It is an Algae called Gloeocapsa magma (try saying that three times fast) anyway this living organism is infecting neighborhoods in the northeast at an alarming rate. It does not matter what the pitch of your roof is or if you are surrounded by trees or if your house is out in the open. Once they are airborne and land on your roof, it is feeding time at the zoo! Given enough time, the colony will cover the roof and damage the shingles.

The second picture shows a house with a little different issue. This roof has a fungus growing on it, sometimes called Roof Moss. It may sound quaint,  but it is anything but. The roof moss not only looks really bad, but it is really bad for the shingles as well.  If left unchecked the fungus will loosen the granules on the shingles causing the roof to require replacement before it's time.

The bottom line is that if you ignore either of these conditions on your roof you will be replacing it way before their time. By the way tearing off the infected shingle and replacing them will cost you in the area of $7000.00 I don't know about you, but that is a lot of money to me. The worst thing is that, for less than one tenth of the price of replacement you could have corrected the situation.

Please have a wonderful day.

  1. Algae and moss are both serious house problems. Not only do these two damage the roof, they also affect the curb appeal of the house. If the conditions are still manageable, you can wash your roof with a mixture of bleach and water, because plants don’t like bleach. If the homeowner decides to replace his or her roof, a good choice would be shingles that are infused with copper granules, since copper is toxic against algae.

  2. The formation of algae may have been caused by the humid weather and a small build up of water. I agree with Richard because this little problems could have huge implications with the quality of the roof. The suggestion he made is the prime choice if the owner indeed decides to replace the roof.
